The Hot New Thing: Google+, and what it means for your small business
Unless you're living under a rock, you've probably heard a lot of about Google+ ("Google Plus") lately. Google+ launched last Tuesday to a select few "industry experts" as Google's own version of Facebook.
About Google+
Google+ is a social network that imports your Facebook and Twitter friends, and allows you to organize them into "Circles." Using Google+, you can update your status or post a photo, video etc. to all of your friends, or just a select Circle. What makes it different from other social networks is that it's integrated with Google search, Youtube and other Google products.
This will come in handy when you're searching Google: websites that your friends like will be more "valuable" than others -- meaning websites that have gamed Google by buying links, keyword-packing their sites and used other immoral SEO practices will no longer show up as high in the search results as they used to. Your friends will determine your search results more. And -- since your friends will influence your search results -- Google will gain more information about each user and searcher than they've ever had before.
Chris Brogan wrote a great article on OPENForum about what all this Google+ nonsense means for a business. His main conclusion: nothing, yet. He says Googe+ currently only supports personal accounts, but considering Google Places and Google's push toward local, business accounts are inevitable. His advice? Set up a Google+ account as soon as you can to get the hang of it and to stay updated on when (not if) business accounts are released.
Imagine being one of the first businesses in your city on Google+. You'll be the talk of the town!
